Multi-Phase Rooftop Solar for Janata Jute Mills
A flagship solar partnership: 4 rooftop phases, floating solar, and BESS
Janata Jute Mills Ltd. in Faridpur is Cynergy Limited’s longest-running industrial solar client, and one of the most extensive single-site solar relationships in Bangladesh’s jute sector. Since 2022, Cynergy has delivered four separate rooftop solar phases, an 8.11 MWp ground-mounted installation, a floating solar installation, and Bangladesh’s first large-capacity battery energy storage system (BESS) at this one facility, together representing approximately 18.87 MWp of solar PV integrated with 8.35 MWh of battery storage.
A Partnership Built in Phases
Rather than a single large installation, Janata Jute Mills’ solar journey with Cynergy has unfolded as a series of phased expansions, each building on the reliability of the last:
- April 2022: 470 KWp, the first rooftop phase, establishing the working relationship.
- February 2023: 2.4 MWp, a major rooftop expansion.
- August 2024: 2.18 MWp, additional rooftop capacity.
- August 2024: 5.13 MWp, the largest single rooftop phase to date.
- 8.11 MWp ground-mounted solar, adding significant capacity beyond available rooftop area.
- 758.4 kWp floating solar, extending generation onto the mill’s water bodies, maximising land-constrained sites.
- 8.35 MWh battery energy storage system, Bangladesh’s first large-capacity BESS, enabling energy storage and grid stability at industrial scale.
Why Phased Deployment Works for Large Industrial Sites
A phased approach lets a facility the size of Janata Jute Mills validate performance, ROI, and operational fit at each stage before committing to the next expansion, reducing risk for the client while letting Cynergy refine site-specific engineering (rooftop load, dust and fibre exposure, shading from adjacent structures) with each successive phase. It also means production continuity was maintained throughout, since each phase was scoped and scheduled independently.
Beyond Rooftop: Floating Solar and Battery Storage
What distinguishes the Janata Jute Mills partnership from a typical rooftop-only project is the addition of ground-mounted and floating solar capturing additional generation capacity beyond rooftop space, integrated with an 8.35 MWh battery energy storage system, the first installation of its scale in Bangladesh. This BESS was delivered collaboratively: Akij Bashir Group led the overall solution, design and procurement; Cynergy Limited handled on-site installation and civil/electrical works; and Sungrow carried out BESS commissioning. Together, these additions move the site beyond simple daytime solar offsetting toward a more complete industrial energy system with storage and dispatch flexibility.
A Model for Bangladesh's Jute and Textile Sector
The Janata Jute Mills partnership illustrates what’s possible when an industrial energy strategy is built over time rather than as a single transaction.
